Yesterday, I have received three rolls of film’s scans from the amazing Carmencita Film Lab. And these guys did an amazing job, as they always do. The photographs are from many different places in five different countries I have visited during the last couple of months. We’ll start with some photos from Azerbaijan’s capital Baku. I traveled to this bizarre dichotomy of modern architecture and rundown back alleys for a few days last summer to visit a football game. I was accompanied by my old Pentax K1000 and a roll of Superia X-tra 400, one of my favorite color negative films.

The city’s central areas and touristically relevant spots, such as the international airport or popular sights, are extraordinarily clean and of an unexpected contemporary style. Leading architects were flown it from all over Europe to design the capital’s flagship buildings. These places clash heavily with shabby areas often just a few hundred meters further, outskirts in desperate need of renovation and archaic seeming towns outside the metropolitan zone. The stark contrast between rich and poor, new and old, urban and rural could hardly be more apparent.
