An Ode to Bern

Every time I return from a trip, I return to what I still believe is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. I miss this place whenever I am away traveling, be it on paradisal beaches, in picturesque mountainous landscapes, or in the world’s most fascinating, bustling metropolises.
This spectacular yet peaceful view of the city’s skyline with all the old housetops – the cathedral and the domes of the Bundeshaus standing out – in front of a seemingly endless chain of snowy Alps. It still takes my breath away over and over again after all these years and immediately evokes a feeling of home and belonging.
This most lovely old quarter, each house you see even more beautiful than the one you’ve just walked past. The bridges, the fountains, the old wooden staircases connecting the Matte neighborhood with the upper part of the city. The wonderful backyard hill Gurten with its panoramic views of the Alps and down over the city.
And when the sun comes out and temperatures slowly begin to rise again in springtime, you can literally feel the good vibes in the air. You know that all these people out in the city are already dreaming of the wonderful joys the summer will bring – just like yourself. Having a barbecue next to the river, or at home on the balcony. Letting the day pass reading a book in the sun, sitting in a bar or café with some friends and a bunch of drinks until late at night. Swimming in the Aare river with its jade-green, almost turquoise water – winding its way through the city, carrying you along in the cold, refreshing water on a hot summer day. Followed by the most delicious (chocolate) ice cream at Gelateria di Berna.
I may not always be around, I may not spend enough time with you. I may keep you waiting – again and again. I may even move to other countries, other continents. But sooner or later, I will always come back for you. And I will come back with a smiling heart.
