Leaving Colombia after a month, we flew from Bogotá to Cancún. We stayed in the city only long enough to go on an Isla Mujeres day trip, then moved on to spend the next two weeks eating our way through Quintana Roo and the Yucatán Peninsula. En route, we got to relax on some beautiful beaches, went diving and snorkelling with eagle rays and turtles and, of course, visited the famous ruins of Chichén Itzá and Ek’ Balam. It was a really wonderful time, even though my daypack was stolen after the first week in Playa del Carmen – a place we initially wanted to avoid, but later decided to stay for one night in order to take a day trip to Cozumel. The next day, my daypack was taken from me when we were waiting for the bus to Tulum. Insurance paid for most of my stuff, but all my photos from the last five weeks were gone and I didn’t have any film left except for the rolls in my two cameras.
Anyways, on we went to the Pacific Coast for the beaches, a great day of beginner’s surfing, dolphin watching, and releasing baby turtles into the sea. Then inland to Oaxaca and finally to la Ciudad de México – both fantastic cities that offered some of the best food we’d eaten on the trip. I hadn’t been able to buy new film in the meantime: I was quite busy talking to insurance, flying to Mexico City for a day to apply for a new passport at the Swiss embassy, trying to find a new Macbook at a reasonable price because I had to finish some work. Also, my favorite Kodak film stocks weren’t available in Mexico for at least two weeks and neither were any other film stocks I was interested in. I ended up with a couple of rolls of Walmart-branded Fuji Superia X-tra 400. Anyways, these are the Kodak Portra frames I had left on my two cameras as well as a few of the Fuji Superia ones.
